In the Shipibo tradition, this practice is known as
"Sama"(La dieta de la medicina tradicional), and we will use this term as it comes from the Shipibo language.
The tradition of Onanya's (shaman-healers) in the Amazon dates back thousands of years. Onanya's work intimately with plants throughout their lives, continuously embarking on personal SAMA to acquire knowledge and to heal both psychological and physical ailments.
"Sama" begins when you ingest a medicinal plant infusion under the guidance of a Onanya, who conducts the ritual of "opening the
Sama." This transfers the energy and spirit of the Master-Plant into your being. Through this communion, the Spirits transform and educate you from within. Once a bond is formed, it integrates into your entire being. Over time, you can cultivate your unique style of communication with the spirits and the Medicine. This process culminates in continuous growth, learning, and connection for the rest of your life.
An integral part of one's spiritual transformation is solitude. Far from civilization, distractions, and daily routines, an individual can attune more deeply to their body, recognizing not only personal needs and challenges but also discovering limitless potential. Dietary restrictions, minimal interpersonal contact, and sexual abstinence optimally prepare an individual for profound communion with Plant Spirits.
There are specific guidelines you must adhere to during and after the
"Sama":
During the "Sama":- Refrain from using any medications (to be discussed individually)
- Avoid cosmetics
- Abstain from strenuous physical activity
- Minimize contact with others
- Limit phone and internet usage
- Adhere to a restricted diet
- Any form of sexual activity is strictly prohibited
- The use of cigarettes, alcohol, or any perception-altering substances is strictly forbidden
Post-dieta guidelines set by the shaman:- Refrain from sexual activity
- Abstain from alcohol
- Avoid pork
- Refrain from using narcotic substances
Why are these rules important? These rules and restrictions are not mere formalities or simply a nod to Shipibo traditions. They exist to protect the delicate inner work that the Plant-Teachers perform within you. However, adhering to these rules ultimately rests on your shoulders. This is the most challenging aspect of introspection. No one will monitor your adherence post-dieta, only you can.
